Punta del Roque

If you are coming from visiting Punta del Hidalgo, your next natural stop is the neighboring town of Bajamar. There, right on the seafront promenade, you will find the Mirador Punta del Roque (Punta del Roque Viewpoint). It is the exact place where you understand why the north of Tenerife is famous for the power of its ocean.

Salt Spray and Power at Punta del Roque Viewpoint

Located on the coast of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, this natural viewpoint overlooks a small rocky peninsula that juts out into the sea. From the Mirador Punta del Roque, you have a front-row seat to see one of the island's most hypnotic spectacles: the "reboso" (swell). Watching the giant Atlantic waves crash against the volcanic rocks and leap meters into the air is something that leaves you speechless.

On one side, you will see the famous natural pools of Bajamar and its lighthouse, which are often enveloped by the white foam of high tides. On the other side, the view gets lost towards the wild coast that connects with Punta del Hidalgo and the Roque de los Dos Hermanos in the distance. It is a site of pure energy, where the smell of the sea floods everything.

Tips from Your Local Insider

Bajamar is a classic for local summer vacations, and here is how to enjoy it:

  • Maximum Caution: The sea here is not a game. If you see a red flag or there is a swell alert, enjoy the show from the barrier. Do not try to go down to the wet rocks of Mirador Punta del Roque for the photo, because a sudden wave can be fatal.
  • Sunset Walk: This viewpoint is connected by a very pleasant seaside promenade. Walking along it at dusk, watching the sun illuminate the lighthouse and the sea foam, is pure therapy.
  • Natural Pools: Don't leave without taking a dip in the Bajamar pools (if they are open). They are free, safe, and allow you to bathe in calm sea water while watching the waves break on the other side of the wall.

Punta del Roque Viewpoint is the window to the wildest Atlantic. A place where the sound of the sea clears your mind.
