La Tarta Viewpoint
Hello nature sweet tooth! I'm your "Local Insider" from Canaguia.com. If you drive up to Teide via the La Esperanza road (TF-24), you are going to encounter one of the most photogenic curiosities of the island. Just before reaching the Izaña Observatory area, the mountain seems to have been sliced by a giant knife. Welcome to the Mirador La Tarta (The Cake Viewpoint), where volcanic history is read in layers.
What Flavor is Your Island?
The name is no coincidence. What you see on the road embankment is a perfect superposition of volcanic strata that resembles a multi-layered cake. At Mirador La Tarta, you can clearly distinguish bands of white (pumice stone), black (basalt), and reddish tones. Each color represents a different eruption and a different material ejected by nearby volcanoes.
It is an open book of geology. The white layers, for example, are usually from more explosive eruptions (like those of Teide or Montaña Blanca), while the black ones are from calmer Strombolian eruptions. Seeing this clean "cut" against the intense blue sky of the high mountains is a visual spectacle you don't expect around a bend in the road.
Tips from Your Local Insider
To truly savor this geological visit, here are my recommendations:
- The Texture Photo: Although the views towards the valley are nice, the winning photo here is a close-up of the layers of earth. The color contrast looks great on Instagram. It looks like an abstract painting!
- Cross with Care: The Mirador La Tarta is on a curve of a mountain road. Cars sometimes drive up spiritedly. If you are going to cross to see the cut up close, do it with a thousand eyes and always in a visible zone.
- Heading to the Stars: You are very close to the Teide Observatory. If you continue up a little more, you will see the white and silver domes of the telescopes. It is a perfect area to stop at night to watch the stars if you don't mind the cold.
La Tarta Viewpoint is proof that in Tenerife, even the ground you walk on is a work of art. A sweet and colorful stop on your route to the sky.
