Piedra de La Rosa Viewpoint

hund

Hello nature detective! I'm your "Local Insider" from Canaguia.com. If you are going up to Teide via the La Orotava road (TF-21), you have to be very attentive. At kilometer 22, hidden in a curve of the forest, you will find one of the most beautiful geological rarities of the island: the Mirador de la Piedra de La Rosa (Stone Rose Viewpoint). Don't look at the horizon; look at the mountain wall.

A Geological Masterpiece at Piedra de La Rosa Viewpoint

Unlike other viewpoints that offer panoramic views of the sea, here the protagonist is a rock. The Mirador de la Piedra de La Rosa shows you a basalt formation that, as the lava cooled thousands of years ago, cracked to form a perfect radial structure. The result looks like a gigantic stone flower embedded in the hillside.

It is a textbook example of what geologists call "radial columnar jointing." It is fascinating to think how nature, through fire and slow cooling, could sculpt something so symmetrical. Surrounded by a lush green forest, the "rose" stands out for its dark color and hypnotic shape.

Tips from Your Local Insider

This is a quick stop, but it has a "trick" to make it safe:

  • Cross Safely: The viewpoint and parking are on one side of the road, but the "Piedra de La Rosa" is right opposite, on the other side. There is a small underpass (tunnel) to cross safely. Use it! The curve is blind and cars pass quickly.
  • The Best Angle: The good photo is taken from the viewpoint platform, not right next to the stone. Step back a bit to capture the full "petals" in the frame.
  • Transition Environment: Look at the vegetation. You are at the limit where the "monteverde" (laurel forest) and heather begin to give way to the Canary pine. The smell here is a fresh mix of humidity and resin.

The Piedra de La Rosa Viewpoint is a geological whim. A curious stop to admire the sculptures that the volcano left us as a gift.
