Samara Viewpoint

Hello space adventurer! I'm your "Local Insider" from Canaguia.com. Today you don't need a rocket to leave Earth; you just need to drive along the TF-38 road towards the Mirador de Samara (Samara Viewpoint). If you are looking for the blackest, purest, and most accessible volcanic landscape in the entire Teide National Park, you have just found your favorite spot.

The Martian Landscape of Mirador de Samara

This corner is unique. Unlike other areas of the park dominated by giant rocks, the surroundings of Mirador de Samara are covered in very dark and fine black "picón" (lapilli/volcanic gravel). Electric green Canary pines sprout from this sea of ash, creating a color contrast that looks like it was Photoshopped.

From here you have one of the most impressive and lesser-known views of the stratovolcano Teide and Pico Viejo. But the best part is that you can climb Samara Mountain itself. It is a small, beautiful volcanic cone. The trail is simple and, upon reaching the top, you feel like the king of the world with the sea of clouds at your feet and the volcanic giant at your back.

Tips from Your Local Insider

This is one of my favorite plans for a Sunday, and here is how to make it perfect:

  • Ideal for families: If you come with kids, this is the best trail (Trail 13). It is short, with little elevation gain, and safe. The little ones love running through the black volcanic earth. Just be warned, they will end up covered in black dust!
  • Closed shoes are a must: Don't even think about coming in flip-flops or sandals. The gravel gets between your toes and is very annoying. Bring sneakers or boots, and be prepared to shake them out well before getting into the car.
  • Mystical Sunset: Being on the western face, watching the sun go down from the top of Samara with La Gomera and La Palma in the background is a free spectacle that is priceless.

Mirador de Samara is proof that you don't need to be an expert mountaineer to touch the volcanic heart of Tenerife. It is an experience from another planet!
