How to get the free Teide summit permit: book online, the limited daily quota, what to bring and why it's mandatory to stand on Spain's peak.
Reaching the 3,718 m summit of Teide, the roof of Spain, isn't just about strong legs: to stand on top you need a free but mandatory Teide summit permit. Without it, the Telesforo Bravo trail from La Rambleta to the summit is off-limits. The good news is that getting it is easy if you plan ahead.
Book online, weeks in advance
You apply for the Teide summit permit free of charge on the official website reservasparquesnacionales.es. The daily quota is limited, so don't leave it to the day before — book weeks ahead, especially in peak season. Pick your day and time slot and bring your confirmation. The whole process is free and takes just a few minutes.
No permit? You've still got a plan
If you miss out on the Teide summit permit, don't panic: the cable car still takes you to the La Rambleta viewpoints at around 3,555 m without any authorization. The views over the sea of clouds and the caldera are worth the ride on their own — the permit is only required for the final stretch to the top. So you can still enjoy the national park even if the quota is gone.
What to bring and when to go
Carry your ID or passport, since it may be checked along with your Teide summit permit. The trail closes in bad weather, so check conditions before heading up. And wrap up warm: it's cold up there even in summer, as our climate guide explains. Start early too — clouds often roll in by afternoon.
